OKEECHOBEE — Sammy Streeter scored 22 points as Eau Gallie held off Okeechobee, 51-48, in girls high school hoops action Monday.

Raeley Matthews had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Brahmans (10-3).

It was a tight game throughout with neither team able to build more than a five-point lead.

Eau Gallie led, 8-4, early and Okeechobee battled back to trail only 10-8 after the first quarter. Okeechobee led, 25-24, at halftime and the game was tied at 37 as it entered the fourth quarter.

Okeechobee was hurt by foul trouble against point guard Cheyenne Nunez who picked up her fourth foul with two minutes to go in the first half. She sat out the entire third quarter. Aaliyah Johnson played capably in her absence.

Eau Gallie coach Mark Tassone said it was a back-and-forth game. Two of his starters didn’t play in the game.

“We had to fight because we put a couple of JV players in the game. It got down to the end. It was a matter of making a free throw, getting a couple of rebounds and controlling the ball.”

Shytria Ash had seven points, three steals and four rebounds for OHS.

Brianna Baker had seven points and four rebounds and Lahna Baker had seven points and four assists for the Lady Brahmans.

Marisa Delgado had 10 points, five steals and seven rebounds for Eau Gallie, (8-6). Delgado made a key steal and hit two keep free throws down the stretch for the Lady Commodores. Ally Streeter had 17 points for Eau Gallie. She hit two bit three-point baskets in the fourth quarter and the front end of a 1-1 free throw situation in the final minute.

Coach Tassone praised his girls for getting the job done when it counted.

“Sammy Streeter is a great player. We lacked two of our scorers tonight and I told her the game is on her shoulders and she needed to score. My point guard (Delgado) had her ups and downs, but she made the free throws when it counted.”

Okeechobee had their chances in the final minute as Ash hit a free throw with 35 seconds left to make it 49-48. Delgado was fouled and made three free throws with 30 seconds to go to make it 51-48 Eau Gallie. The teams exchanged turnovers in the final minute and Okeechobee could not get a three-point shot up in the final seconds.

Tassone said Matthews impressed him because whenever she touched the ball she was able to score.

“The big Okeechobee girls hurt us inside. We made a couple of adjustments and we had to cover the middle. Once (Matthews) caught the ball in the middle, the ball was in the basket. It was a great job on her part and she kept her team in the game.”
