OHS boys basketball loses to Fort Pierce

OKEECHOBEE — Anthony Knighton scored 21 points to lead a balanced attack as Fort Pierce Central erupted for 55 second-half points and defeated Okeechobee, 92-71, in high school boys basketball action Friday at OHS.

The Cobras outscored the Brahmans, 29-9, in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Okeechobee (14-13) had played well in the first half as they built a five-point lead in the second quarter, 38-33, and held a 38-37 lead at halftime.

Knighton said his team just played their game and worked hard.

“Coach told us at halftime to come out and play hard and we always play with a lot of intensity. We play good defense and force a lot of turnovers,” he said.

Shaquoy Ferrol had another strong game for OHS with 14 points, eight rebounds. He added five blocked shots. Ferrol got in foul trouble and fouled out in the third quarter. After he left the game, OHS was unable to compete with the Cobras, (13-7).

The game was fun to watch in the first half as the Brahman band and the large crowd cheered the team on. It was close and intense for much of the half.

Malcolm Chambers gave the Brahmans a boost with six points off the bench in the first quarter. Fred Bradley hit a three pointer and Chris Epps had four free throws in the second quarter to help the cause.

Knighton though spurred the third quarter explosion with 12 points and David Reese had five points for the Cobras.

“I wasn’t surprised that Okeechobee played a closer game. When we played at Fort Pierce they made a lot of mistakes. They cleaned it up a lot out here,” Knighton added.

Fort Pierce had ripped OHS 76-32 on Dec. 17.

The Cobras advantage was depth and athleticism. Coach Chris Maxon constantly could go to the bench and find productive players with a lot of energy. The Cobras bench outscored OHS, 27-17.

David Reese had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Fort Pierce. Jonah Jacques added 10 points, three steals and two assists. Malik Darden added seven points, and Barry Bailey nine points.

The game was the final home game for seniors Fred Bradley and Chris Epps who were honored before the game. The team also honored their three senior team managers.

Bradley had seven points and seven rebounds and Epps provided 10 points for OHS.

The Brahman junior varsity lost to Fort Pierce Central, 50-35. Mateo Vasquez led OHS with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Janavious Futch added nine points, and three steals. Sean Osceola pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists. Fort Pierce improved to (17-7) on the season. OHS fell to (14-9). Fort Pierce also won the freshman contest, 68-58. OHS is now (7-5) on the year.
