Lady Brahmans soccer team holds senior night

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahmans soccer team recognized their seniors on their last game of the regular season against the Sebring Blue Streaks on Jan. 22.
The Lady Brahmans opened the game with a quick score within the first three minutes by senior Alani Garcia and were able to carry that 1-0 lead all the way until halftime.

Sebring had multiple opportunities to pull even with the Lady Brahmans, but most of the Blue Streaks shots were wide and those that were on the mark were caught or batted away by Lady Brahman goal keeper sophomore Briann Woodham.

Throughout the first half OHS senior Ashton English proved to be one of the more dangerous attackers for the Lady Brahmans. English was able to consistently out maneuver and out run her Sebring opponents on the field. Lady Brahman head coach Eric Swant says it’s always been that way for English, who was elected team captain this year.

“Ashton has always played at that speed,” said Swant. “In my opinion, it is half natural and half the fact that she grew up playing against the boys, with her dad coaching. It’s fun to watch but she definitely keeps everyone on their toes.”

English has already accepted an offer from Daytona State college in Florida to attend school continue her soccer career.

After half time Sebring came out was able put multiple shots on the Okeechobee goal in the first few minutes. Lady Brahman goal keeper Woodham was able to bat one shot away with a fingertip save but a few minutes later the Blue Streaks found their equalizer when they were able to send a ball just over Woodham’s outstretched hand.

Six minutes later Sebring added another goal to take the lead for the first time in the match.

Lady Brahman strikers Garcia and English each had shots on the Sebring goal in the second half, but none were able to connect and Okeechobee fell to Sebring 2-1.

“It was a good, competitive game,” said Swant of the Sebring match. “It didn’t turn out quite the way I planned, but then this year has been a struggle the whole season. We seem to lose focus and struggle on offense and we can’t seem to find the solution.”
With the loss the Lady Brahmans fell to 2-10-1 on the year.

After the game eight seniors were recognized for their time with the team. The seniors included Ashton English, Cansady Pasillas, Andrea Ramirez, Natalie Saucedo, Sandy Leon, Alani Garcia, Giselle Leal and Jennifer Baltazar-chavez. The seniors were escorted by their parents and family members. OHS principal Dylan Tedders was also present to acknowledge the seniors and congratulate them.
