Okeechobee County to develop sidewalk plan

OKEECHOBEE — Commissioners Thursday approved an Engineering Proposal from CivilServ Engineering for the development of a Sidewalk Master Plan.

The commissioners voted to transfer $49,240 from reserves in the Road Improvement Fund 304 to pay for the work.

The plan is to be completed within 90 days.

The project includes developing a plan for pedestrian walkways in unincorporated Okeechobee County. It will include conceptual maps, priorities, cost estimates and project need.

County engineer Gene Schriener said the project will “cover all the bases.”

He said the plan will be ready for the commissioners’ review by Feb. 5, 2016.

“This is going to cover everything you think is necessary for sidewalks in the county?” asked Commissioner Terry Burroughs.

“We went through maps of the county and determined everywhere we think we need sidewalks,” said Mr. Schriener.

He said the report on Feb. 5 will include a prioritization.

He said Basswood is a high priority because of the traffic on Northwest 36th.

“This is something that is woefully needed in this county,” he said. “I am glad to see the county moving forward on it.”
