Vandals strike at the Sports Complex

OKEECHOBEE — File this under reasons why we can’t have nice things: unknown vandals have struck at the Sports Complex, located at 400 N.W. 27th Lane.

On Tuesday, May 31, Deputy J. Henderson of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s office responded to a criminal mischief complaint. According to Kenny Murphy, Project Coordinator of the Sports Complex, concession stand shutters along with a water fountain had been vandalized. While observing the damage on the shutters located on the east, west and north side of the concession stand, the deputy noticed a large metal pipe, four feet long and two inches in diameter. Because the pipe was lying in wet grass, latent prints could not be retrieved, but the pipe is believed to be the weapon of choice to vandalize the property.

In addition, the vandalized water fountain, located on the east side of the score tower, was found broken off the cement wall.

There are no known suspects, and unfortunately, there is no video surveillance at the Sports Complex.

The estimated cost to repair the shutters is $2,500, and the water fountain damage amounts to $500.

In an unrelated incident, deputies found fresh spray paint on the back wall of the car wash area at the old Chevron at 2605 U.S. 441 South. The still-wet black and gray spray paint read “BOOG.” Deputy Jonathan Kemp remarked that he had worked a case with the same graffiti sometime last year.

In addition to the graffiti, the power box on the east side of the building had the door panel pulled off. It appeared that none of the copper wires had been cut though.
