Man caught returning stolen items to store

OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee man was arrested Monday for allegedly trying to return a bow and arrows to Walmart after he had just reportedly stolen the items from the store.

Leslie Davis Martin, 41, N.W. 53rd Terrace, was arrested Nov. 30 on a felony charge of petit theft.

He was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail on a bond of $2,500. Jail records indicate he has been released on bond.

An arrest report by Officer Victoria Davito, of the Okeechobee City Police Department (OCPD), stated store surveillance cameras apparently show Martin picking up a box containing a bow and arrows. He then opened the box, removed its contents and put the box down in another aisle, continued the report.

At that point Martin took the bow and arrows to the service desk and asked to return the items because “… the bow was too hard for his son to pull back,” stated the officer’s report.

A Walmart employee at the service desk then told Martin they needed another bow and arrows in their package so that the bar code could be scanned. Officer Davito stated Martin left the service desk then returned with another package.

“At that time, police took him into custody,” added the officer.

The price of the bow and arrows was $199, which means the offense is normally a misdemeanor charge of petit theft. However, pointed out Officer Davito, a check of Martin’s criminal history revealed he has had prior theft convictions which then bumps the petit theft charge up to a third-degree felony.

Martin’s arraignment has been set for Jan. 7, 2016, at 10 a.m.
